Step 2: Optimizing Your Operation
A successful electrification project doesn’t just end at installation, getting on the right time of use rate and setting your water heater to load shift away from peak times are the key to a successful experience. Here are some simple steps to optimize your operation.
Set your rate to ev2-a or e-elec
To qualify for this program, you must enroll in one of the electrification rates: EV2-A or E-ELEC.
These rates will help you make the most of your new water heater by rewarding you for using electricity during low-cost off-peak hours and will be advantageous for you as you continue to electrify more appliances.
If you’re unsure which rate will be better for you, we recommend starting with EV2-A and then using PG&E’s rate comparison tool (pge.com/myrate) to determine which is better after three to six months. Based on our analysis of CleanPowerSF customers with heat pump water heaters, about 90 percent of customers do better on EV2-A than E-ELEC.
Enroll in a load shift program or a demand response program
Demand Response Option
CleanPowerSF customers have three choices for demand response programs: OhmConnect, PG&E’s Automated Response Technology, or the Hourly Flex Pricing Pilot. If you are not currently enrolled in a demand response program, OhmConnect will usually be your easiest option. Click here to enroll in OHMConnect.
WatterSaver Option (Inactive as of November 1)
WatterSaver is a load shift program that will automatically set your water heater each day to optimize your water heater uses WIFI or cellular technology to communicate directly with your water heater to automatically optimize its operation to utilize the lowest cost of electricity. It is the preferred method to comply with this program. Note: WatterSaver is currently paused and not taking any additional applicants. While it is inactive, we recommend submitting an interest form with WatterSaver and then complying with our Demand Response Program requirement below.
