This CleanPowerSF Campaign Has People Seeing Green

As SFPUC's community choice energy program, CleanPowerSF encourages its customers to reduce their environmental impact and “green” their homes with CleanPowerSF’s 100% renewable electricity service called SuperGreen.

Over the past few months, we’ve shared this message via a multilingual digital advertising and in-person SuperGreen Upgrade campaign to San Francisco residents, particularly renters. A major component of the campaign was a life-size apartment set painted entirely—you guessed it—green.

Since April, staff have attended community events with an eye-catching, “Super Green” apartment set to encourage customers to upgrade to SuperGreen. Visitors were encouraged to take a photo inside the apartment, tag @MySFPUC on social media to share with their networks, and upgrade to CleanPowerSF’s 100% renewable electricity service.

The green apartment set was a huge success. The unique setup stood out at events but also allowed staff to engage with visitors longer than usual. Staff answered questions on everything from how to read power bills to electrification best practices. They also highlighted the agency’s public power utility, Hetch Hetchy Power, and the City’s efforts to expand public power to all of San Francisco as well.

The SuperGreen Upgrade campaign made sure to prioritize equity, too. Staff attended a variety of events throughout San Francisco, including the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, Earth Day in Golden Gate Park, and a San Francisco Giants Watch Party in the Mission, organized by the Latino Task Force. Interpreters were available at each event, along with translated materials in Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino. The online advertising component was crafted in partnership with consultants to make sure in-language messaging resonated across different cultures in San Francisco as well.

While the digital advertising component of the campaign has ended, future events with the green apartment set are being considered in the Bayview, Excelsior, and Civic Center.
